NEWS CENTER - The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria announced that the resistance at the Tishreen Dam has reached its goal and the watch action has ended.
After the attacks launched by Turkey and the Syrian National Army (SNA) against the Tishreen Dam on 8 December 2024, the Autonomous Administration for North and East Syria called for a vigil around the dam.
Hundreds of people from cities such as Kobanê, Cizîre, Tebqa, Reqa, Qamişlo, Amudê, Hesekê and Dêrik have been holding a vigil at the Tishreen Dam since 8 January. The Autonomous Administration announced that the resistance reached its goal and the vigil was ended.
In the statement made at the dam, those who lost their lives in the resistance were commemorated. The statement was read in Arabic by Hisên Osman, Co-Chair of the Executive Council, and in Kurdish by Evîn Siwêd, Co-Chair of the Executive Council.
The statement reads:
"Since the beginning of January 2025, our region has witnessed a large-scale attack targeting the infrastructure and vital centers, in an attempt to undermine the will of the peoples striving for freedom and dignity.
These aggressive attacks began with a direct and systematic targeting of the area surrounding Tishreen Dam by mercenary groups affiliated with the Turkish state, which posed a significant threat to the dam as a vital facility that provides water and energy to millions of people. In the face of this existential threat, the people and components of North and East Syria, including Kurds, Arabs, and Syriacs, responded to the call of national responsibility, joining a wide popular resistance under the banner of defending their land and achievements.
Since January 8th, hundreds of people, led by women and youth organizations, flocked to Tishreen Dam, announcing their commitment to the general mobilization to protect the region. They joined the resistance alongside the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Women's Protection Units (YPJ), which formed an impenetrable shield against attempts to advance.
This resistance marked immortal heroic chapters in the face of the war machine, proving that the peoples of North and East Syria will not accept a life without dignity and freedom, and that they are ready to defend their existence to the last breath. Tishreen Dam stood as a witness to a legendary struggle crafted by its sons and daughters, writing a golden page in the history of revolution and resistance.
We express our pride and gratitude to our heroic martyrs, including Martyr Manija, Martyr Karam Shehabi, Martyr Haroun, Martyr Aziz Arab, and others who sacrificed their lives for freedom. We also wish a speedy recovery to all the wounded, and we pledge that their sacrifices will not go in vain.
This resistance, which lasted for more than 100 days with steadfastness and dedication, succeeded in protecting its land and achievements. On this basis, we announce its conclusion today, while emphasizing the continued vigilance and struggle in the face of any new threat.
On behalf of the Autonomous-Administration of North and East Syria, we extend our greetings to all those who contributed to this steadfastness, especially the people of the cities and towns of North and East Syria, who provided full support to the resistance of Tishreen Dam.
We also extend our special greetings to the medical cadres who carried out their duty under the most difficult conditions, and to the journalists who conveyed the truth, including Martyr Jihan, Martyr Nazim, Martyr Agid Roj, and all those who followed this epic and stood by their people.
Tishreen Dam has become a unifying national symbol, a stronghold of popular resilience in the face of Turkish ambitions, and a living example of the allied peoples' ability to defend their land and resources, no matter the challenges."
